Unlike many colonial settlements that were carefully planned on paper, St. George’s evolved organically. Its streets followed the well-trodden footpaths created by settlers, sailors, merchants and soldiers as they sought the quickest routes between homes, wharves, shops and fortifications.
Wander through Somers Garden in St. George’s, the Botanical Gardens in Paget, or Palm Grove Gardens in Devonshire, and you will see them: perfect circles of weathered limestone cutting beautifully through the greenery.
When Bermuda was first settled, colonists built simple shelters using native Bermuda cedar and thatched palmetto leaves. Unfortunately, these early structures proved vulnerable to hurricanes and tropical storms. At the same time, settlers faced another challenge: Bermuda had no rivers, lakes, or streams to provide a reliable source of fresh water.
In 1790, the government of Bermuda purchased 145 acres of land for the township of Hamilton, making Front Street the first surveyed road and in 1815 the Capital moved to Hamilton
